In collaboration with Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten, we developed a proposal for the renewal of the cultural center De Skâns in Gorredijk. An extension of a school building from 2004 will be transformed and expanded to create a new home for the multifunctional center De Skâns. This will be a place where people come together to meet, celebrate, make music, enjoy coffee or a beer, attend performances, participate in events, learn something new, seek advice or support, relax, and unwind.

The new Skâns is a welcoming space with a homely quality, a clear and intuitive layout, and accessible to everyone. The design offers a rich variety of spaces with numerous possible uses and stands out with a pleasant and bright appearance – both inside and out – while maintaining a sturdy and sustainable character.

De Skâns evolves with its users – it can be adapted and reshaped time and again. What happens inside is visibly expressed on the outside. The interior is robust, able to withstand heavy use, yet remains warm and inviting.

This transformation marks a clear departure from the office-like atmosphere of the existing school building. System ceilings are replaced with wooden finishes, the staircases are newly defined, and the welcoming café truly becomes a place to go out and enjoy. Interior and exterior spaces flow into one another seamlessly.

At the same time, the project makes grateful use of the possibilities and inherent qualities of the existing structure. The building has proven to be both flexible and future-proof.

To the outside world, De Skâns presents itself as a rich, joyful, collective, and creative place. Visitors arriving see a building with an open ground floor, clear lighting, and a generous, inviting canopy. It’s immediately clear where the main entrance is, how and where one is welcomed, and where to buy a ticket or order a drink. The architectural language and gestures of the building are clear, hospitable, and inviting.
